apple and spiced baked french toast

1 large loaf of French or Italian bread

8 large eggs

3 1/2 cups milk or light cream

1 cup sugar

1 tablespoon vanilla ( I use more because I love vanilla)

3 teaspoons cinnamon

1 teaspoon nutmeg

6 Granny Smith apples

2 tablespoons butter

  • Slice bread into 1 1/2 inch slices. Spray 9 x 13 glass pan with oil or non stick spray. Place bread in glass dish, filled to the top stacking
  • In a separate bowl, beat eggs, 1/2 cup sugar, milk and vanilla with a whisk. Pour one half of this mixture over bread
  • Peel and core and slice apples. and place sliced apples on top of bread to cover
  • Pour balance of egg mixture over bread
  • Mix remaining 1/2 cup sugar, cinnamon and nutmeg and sprinkle evenly over the top of apples, dot with butter
  • Cover and refrigerate overnight
  • Preheat oven to 350 degrees
  • Bake uncovered for an hour
  • Let sit for 5 to 10 minutes before serving

Serve with real maple syrup and chicken sausage
