marinara sauce


Please adjust recipe if you are making for more than 6 people.

2 cans (28 oz. can) crushed tomatoes – I buy no salt or sometimes Hunts natural

4 tablespoons olive oil

2 tablespoons onion

2 cloves garlic, minced

fresh or dried basil to taste

fresh or dried oregano to taste

1/2- cup red wine ( Marsala or Malbec work great)

2 tablespoons butter

salt & pepper

raw sugar (optional)

mushroom (optional)

crushed red pepper (if you prefer spice)

  • Add oil to pan with garlic and onion
  • Saute for 2 minutes
  • Add tomatoes and all spices
  • Add wine ( about 1/4 cup)
  • Add  butter ( this takes some of the acid away)

Simmer for an hour or longer.

Serve over pasta or with any recipe that calls for marinara sauce.

Vegan version: add soy margarine instead of butter
